Mutual Respect

Their rivalry can be traced to March 22, 1979.

On that date a senior and a sophomore met on the hardwood for the first time that year. It wasn’t just a game. It was the NCAA men’s college basketball championship game. It marked the first of many competitions between Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

Their fierce rivalry became legend. Each drove themselves to outwork and outperform the other. Any game of H-O-R-S-E between them would have been “behind the back, double bounce, off the rim, nothing but net.”

Six years after that NCAA championship game, Larry and Magic were enticed to film a TV commercial together.

During a break in filming, they decided to grab a bite for lunch. As the façade of pleasantries gave way to honest conversation, they learned they were more than rivals. They respected each other. That respect became the foundation for a friendship which continues decades later.

Mutual respect between you and your sweetheart is part of the Relationship Triangle, the foundation upon which your relationship with your sweetheart is established. This strong relational foundation will bring more Romance between the two of you.

  3. Help your sweetheart with chores or when walking through the valley of the shadow of death;
  4. Show appreciation and say “thank you”; and most importantly when you
  5. Listen, actively listen to what your sweetheart shares;

When you behave in a way that’s respectful, you show admiration for your sweetheart.

Consider how mutual respect helped build a friendship between two former competitive rivals. Know that mutual respect will bring more romance into your relationship. Robert
